In Memory of Gary McDonald
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Richard Gary McDonald, Director of Operations for Bob Lewis Ballpark, on July 1, 2026.
Gary’s life was defined by his love of baseball, his commitment to community, and his dedication to helping others. A lifelong resident of Western North Carolina, Gary was a graduate of Enka High School and went on to pursue his dream of professional baseball, signing with the Baltimore Orioles after attending Brevard College. His accomplishments as an athlete were recognized in 2025 when he was inducted into the Enka High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements in baseball and basketball.
After a successful career with Ingles, Gary dedicated the later years of his life to managing and operating Bob Lewis Ballpark, where he continued doing what he loved most—bringing people together through sports. He also remained an active player with the Asheville Sox organization, including being part of the 2019 Roy Hobbs World Series Championship team.
Gary’s impact reached far beyond the baseball field. He was a mentor, a friend, and a true servant to the community. He especially cherished opportunities to support youth baseball and softball programs, including special needs athletic programs, ensuring that athletes of all abilities had the opportunity to compete, grow, and create memories.
Those who knew Gary will remember his hard work, determination, resilience, kindness, and his wonderful sense of humor. His smile and laughter brought joy to everyone around him, and his genuine care for others made people feel valued and welcomed.
We extend our deepest condolences to Gary’s children, Patrick and Kasey, his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched. His legacy will continue through every player who takes the field, every family who gathers at the ballpark, and every memory created at Bob Lewis Ballpark.
Thank you, Gary, for your years of service, leadership, and dedication to our community. Your love for the game and the people who make it special will never be forgotten.
Your legacy will always be part of Bob Lewis Ballpark.
