Last Friday, Sept. 24, Bob Lewis Ballpark welcomed more than 100 kids and players in the WNC Special Needs Sports Donnie Jones World Series. Local youth baseball teams also came out to join the fun and support the players, with many fans to cheer them on.
The WNC Special Needs Sports program began in 2011 and is geared toward those with special needs, young and old. Special Needs Sports provides the opportunity for children and adults in Western North Carolina with special needs to play in baseball and basketball leagues.
The Special Needs Sports program is run by volunteers and funded by donations, so there’s no cost to any of the players. There are no restrictions, so players of any age or ability level can participate. The program provides all equipment needed to play.
The Donnie Jones World Series event was sponsored by Blossman Gas, Food Lion, Lewis Real Estate and All League Baseball.
This past weekend, we welcomed around 30 teams for the All League Baseball Under Armour Tournament. Participating teams hailed from North Carolina (Asheville, Fletcher, Maiden, Marion, Mills River, Pineville and Weaverville), South Carolina (Duncan, Graniteville, Greer and Pickens), and Tennessee (Corryton and Jonesborough). Congratulations to all the teams, coaches and families! Thanks for your great sportsmanship!
